At MPS, Mrs. Harrison's 1st grade class had a blast learning in our Teddy Bear Cafe! Students made pretend sandwiches using pieces that represented tens and ones, and blended letter sounds to create words as part of our cafe-themed activities. While wearing chef hats they decorated with math and reading skills, and aprons kindly donated by a parent, the class listened to The Last Chocolate Chip Cookie and discussed the story’s setting together. This hands-on, creative experience made learning math and reading extra sweet!

Happy National Arts in Education Week!

This week, we celebrate the power of the arts in shaping well-rounded, creative, and confident students. From music, dance, and theatre to visual arts, media arts, and design—arts education helps students discover their voice, build confidence, and think in innovative ways.

We are proud to support the arts in our schools and the talented students and educators who bring creativity to life every day!

Mrs. Valerie and Mrs. Alyssa’s PreK class at HPE has been working hard to learn and memorize their lunch numbers. Several of them are already able to “check out” at lunch independently. Hooray for having these life skills!

🎨 What’s in a name? Mrs. Latimer’s third grade art students at Wright Elementary kicked off the school year with a thoughtful and creative lesson centered around the book "That's Not My Name" by Anoosha Syed.

After identifying the problem in the story — that Mirha’s name is constantly mispronounced — students engaged in meaningful conversations about the importance of learning and respecting each other’s names, especially at the start of a new school year. Students also had the opportunity to share the stories behind their own names.

To wrap up the lesson, third graders created vibrant line design letters using paint, oil pastels, and Sharpies — combining personal meaning with the element of art: line. 🖌️💬✨
